ABOUT ESQ CONSULTING AND MARIANNE MERRITT TALBOT

Marianne Merritt Talbot, a former practicing attorney, is the owner of ESQ Consulting.

For nearly two decades, both as an attorney and as a marketing specialist and executive coach, Marianne has been involved in nearly all aspects of legal marketing, including training, planning, and public relations.  She has been involved with and/or has managed the development of promotional materials, newsletters, proposals and presentations, and firm marketing events, for her various firms.  In addition, she has identified and driven firm efforts (including authoring articles for numerous local and regional publications) to develop firm profiles in cutting-edge areas.  She approaches marketing challenges with an energetic and creative eye, and is dedicated to harness the strengths of attorneys she works with to make marketing efforts productive and even enjoyable.

Marianne’s background in law, marketing and training is wide-ranging.  She practiced complex commercial litigation (including in the areas of civil rights, women’s rights and animal protection law) for over 14 years (including in high-profile cases involving press and media relations and television appearances) before founding an executive coaching and training company where she worked with an array of clients, both individual and corporate, on marketing, sales, leadership, and presentation skills.  Marianne's marketing skills are dynamic and savvy:   she is a published author, journalist and book reviewer; conference speaker; CLE presenter;  and event organizer.   A key to Marianne's legal and marketing success is her enthusiasm and creativity, which is a quality she imparts to all her clients so they, too, can reach their goals and develop a national reputation.

Marianne is an accomplished teacher, trainer, and facilitator.  She was an adjunct law professor at the George Washington University Law School and the American University, Washington College of Law where she taught, inter alia, legal writing and oral advocacy.  She also taught undergraduate women’s studies courses at the State University of New York at Albany.  Marianne has provided writing and presentation skills training to a variety of outside corporations and entities, including for the judges and attorney staff of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission, the Rosa Mexicano restaurant group, the New York Opportunity Network, Women In Need (donated pro bono services), and many others.

Prior to being a practicing attorney, Marianne studied law in Washington, DC where she worked at a number of leading civil rights organizations, including the Lawyers' Committee For Civil Rights Under Law (assisting in protecting the voting rights of African-Americans in Louisiana and Mississippi), the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (working on education and employment discrimination cases), and also at the United States Department of Justice, where she worked on criminal civil rights prosecutions (including the Rodney King trial).

Marianne's other professions have included:  Director of Corporate Services for an Internet start-up, professional violinist, jewelry designer, bookstore manager, vintage clothing store manager, amateur actress, and personal stylist.

Marianne is admitted to practice in New York, Washington, DC and Virginia.  She lives in historic Park Slope, Brooklyn, with her husband Daniel and their beautiful daughter.
