Firm Business Development Planning
Without a marketing plan in place, firm marketing efforts tend to be limited in scope and haphazard in execution. Developing and executing a marketing plan with consistency, creativity and dedication will ensure that your firm – and the attorneys within it – turn into rainmaking machines.
ESQ Consulting will work with you to put a business plan in place, through a two-fold process that addresses both the “forest” and the “trees” within your practice.
The marketing plan will not only survey the firm, but each individual attorney through a confidential and comprehensive process.
First, together with firm principals, we will assess your firm, its marketing activities, and its current goals. This is the “forest”: do you have the clients you need and want? What are your current marketing activities? What is your current identity, image and reputation? What is your goal market? What problems, if any, have you identified within your firm that need addressing? Is your firm brand (i.e, the visual element of your firm as represented by its website, logo, office appearance, brochures, etc.) represent who you truly are (or who you want to become)? Do the attorneys within the firm live up to their rainmaking obligations? What are the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities within the firm’s practice groups?
This leads to the second prong of our analysis: we look at the individual “trees” that make up the practice. What activities do the attorneys in your firm engage in to develop the firm? Do they have their own marketing plans? Do they know how to effectively network? Do they have clients coming in the doors and referral sources? Does the firm utilize each attorney's strengths to its greatest advantage? Does the firm sufficiently support its attorneys in their marketing responsibilities?
At the conclusion of the research process, ESQ Consulting will present each client with a proposed firm-wide (and, as appropriate, group-specific) marketing plan, along with individual marketing plans for each attorney in the practice. These Business Development Plans can be implement immediately, and will include specific action plans, timeframes for action items, and prospective targets (i.e., clients, referral sources, client prospects, networking opportunities, etc.).
In addition, for a nominal fee, ESQ Consulting will offer coaching and training on an ongoing basis to motivate and continue activity on the business develop plans and the efforts of attorneys within the firm.
Attorney Performance Training and Coaching
Attorneys don't go to law school to learn sales and marketing skills, nor after graduation do they usually learn any. It is the rare firm that instills into its attorneys that having a "marketing mindset" is integral to their success. Nor does sitting at one's desk billing 12 hours a day, getting the occasional media mention, or even winning cases guarantee that clients will stream through the door.
Attorneys may be uncomfortable with the concept of “selling” themselves. In some cases they may not understand what marketing skills work (and which ones don’t), what effective networking is, how to build a business pipeline, or even how to provide client service in a manner that will build relationships that will last for the long term. Training can provide the answers to many of these issues, and insure that all your lawyers are doing the things that get results.
With more than 17 years of experience working as a highly successful attorney, law professor, marketing professional, business owner, and executive coach and trainer, Marianne Talbot has seen what works and what doesn’t work for lawyers in developing their business and enhancing their reputations.
ESQ Consulting's training programs for lawyers provides an overview of marketing and business development for the purpose of getting as many lawyers as possible on the same page; and for the more experienced attorneys, offers a refresher on the tools and techniques that will work best for them individually.
The lawyer training sessions vary from lunch hour seminars to full-day courses. All courses are custom-designed for your firm or practice group. Areas covered include, inter alia:
